How to Check If AI Is Citing Your Website (Free Manual Method + What to Automate)

You rank on Google, but you have no idea whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews ever mention your business. There's no ranking report for AI answers, so most owners simply guess. Here's how to check it properly first by hand for free, then how to make it repeatable.

Why you can't just "Google it"
AI answers are generated fresh each time, so they vary by the exact prompt, by platform, and even between two runs of the same question. A competitor named today might be gone tomorrow. That's why a one-time glance tells you almost nothing — you need a small, repeatable method that samples the same prompts across the tools your buyers actually use.
The free manual method, step by step
Set aside 30–45 minutes. You're going to act like a buyer and record what the AI says about your category.
Write your real buyer prompts. Not your brand name — the questions a customer asks before they know you exist. Things like "best [your service] in [your city]", "who should I hire for [problem]", "top [product] for [use case]".
Run each prompt in every major tool. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. Paste the same prompt into each.
Record four things per answer: Were you named? Were you cited with a clickable link? Which sources did the AI pull from? Who got recommended instead of you?
Run each prompt 2–3 times. Because answers drift, repeat and note whether you appear consistently, occasionally, or never.
Score it in a simple grid (prompt down the side, platform across the top; mark each cell cited / mentioned / absent).
How to read your results
Three outcomes matter. Cited means the AI named you and linked you to the goal. Mentioned means it named you without a link, partial credit. Absent means you're invisible for that query. Pay special attention to the sources column: if the AI is pulling roundups, review sites, and Reddit threads instead of anyone's homepage, that tells you the battle for that query is happening off your website and being #1 on your own domain won't fix it.
Why the manual method breaks down
The manual check is perfect for a reality check, but it doesn't scale. Running a handful of prompts by hand across four tools already takes most of an hour. Do it for twenty prompts, repeat for drift, track it month over month, and compare against three competitors, and you're looking at a full day of spreadsheet work that's stale the moment you finish. There's no trend line and no easy benchmark.
What to automate
A repeatable report solves exactly what the manual method can't: a fixed set of prompts run across every model, re-run over time so you can see whether you're gaining or losing ground, side-by-side competitor comparison, and a prioritized list of what to fix first. That's the difference between knowing you have a problem and knowing which lever to pull.
What to do with a bad result
If you're absent or only mentioned, the fix depends on why. Off-site invisibility (the AI cites everyone but you) is a consensus problem; you need mentions on the sources the AI already trusts. On-site invisibility (it describes your topic but never names you) is usually structure, schema, or crawlability. Our companion guide on getting recommended by AI walks through each fix.
FAQ
How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my business?
Ask ChatGPT the buying questions your customers ask — "best [service] in [city]", "who should I use for [problem]" — rather than searching your brand name. Note whether you're named, whether it links you, and which sources it pulls. Repeat 2–3 times because answers vary between runs.
Why do I show up in AI one day and not the next?
AI answers are generated fresh each time and weight sources probabilistically, so the same prompt can surface different businesses on different runs. This is normal. It's why you should sample each prompt several times and track consistency, not rely on a single check.
Does being cited by AI actually drive traffic?
Citations with links drive direct referral clicks, but the bigger effect is influence: buyers increasingly act on the AI's recommendation before visiting any site. Being named as a recommended option shapes the shortlist even when it doesn't produce a measurable click.
How often should I re-check?
Monthly is enough for most small businesses, or after any significant change to your site, reviews, or off-site presence. The value is in the trend, so check on a consistent cadence rather than sporadically.
Why does AI cite Reddit instead of my website?
For "who should I use" questions, models lean on third-party consensus — Reddit, review sites, and roundups — because they read as unbiased. If that's what you're seeing, the work is earning genuine mentions in those places, not just optimizing your own pages.
