How to Migrate from Wix Editor to Wix Studio Without Losing Your SEO

There's a question that lands in our inbox at least a few times a month: 'We want to upgrade to Wix Studio, but we're terrified of losing our Google rankings. Is it safe?'

The answer is: yes, it's safe -- if you follow the right process. The wrong process can cost you months of organic traffic recovery. Here's exactly what that right process looks like, step by step.

Important technical note: Unlike some platform migrations, moving from classic Wix Editor to Wix Studio is not a one-click switch. Because the two platforms have different underlying architectures, it requires a full site rebuild in Wix Studio. Your existing classic site remains live until you're ready to launch the new one.

Step 1: Baseline Everything Before You Start

Before touching anything, document your current position:

  • Export your Google Search Console data - which queries bring traffic, which pages rank, what your current impressions and click-through rates are.

  • Run a full page inventory - every URL on your current site, its page title, meta description, and whether it's indexed.

  • Document all existing 301 redirects - if any are currently in place, they must be preserved.

  • Note all installed apps and integrations - Bookings, Stores, Events, third-party scripts, analytics pixels.

This baseline is your safety net. It tells you exactly what you had before -- so you can verify you've preserved it all after launch.


Step 2: Map Your URL Structure

This is where most DIY migrations go wrong. If your current site has URLs like /about-us and your new Wix Studio site generates /about, that's a broken link -- and a ranking signal lost.

Map every existing URL to its new equivalent. Where the URL changes, you'll need a 301 redirect. Wix Studio has a built-in 301 redirect manager (Settings > SEO > URL Redirect Manager) - use it.

Ideally: keep URL structures identical wherever possible. Fewer redirects means fewer ranking risks.



Step 3: Build in a Separate Workspace

Wix Studio lets you create a completely new site in a separate workspace while your current site stays live. This is the only safe way to do a migration.

Your visitors, customers, and Google continue seeing your current site throughout the build. Nothing is disrupted until you choose to go live.


Step 4: Migrate Content Systematically

Don't just copy-paste. For each page:

  1. Recreate the page structure in Wix Studio with proper H1/H2/H3 hierarchy.

  2. Paste in and review all text content -- update any outdated copy at this stage.

  3. Upload images through Wix's Media Manager, using descriptive filenames and alt text.

  4. Set the page's meta title and meta description to match or improve on the original.

  5. For CMS content (blog posts, products), import via Wix's CSV import tools where possible.


Step 5: Configure SEO Settings on the New Site

Before launch, verify these settings in Wix Studio's SEO panel:

  • Sitemap is generated and includes all pages.

  • Robots.txt is correctly configured -- no pages inadvertently blocked.

  • All page titles and meta descriptions are set -- no blank or duplicate metas.

  • Google Analytics and Search Console tracking codes are connected.

  • Structured data is configured for relevant pages (FAQ, LocalBusiness, Article).

  • All 301 redirects are live in the redirect manager.


Step 6: Launch and Monitor, The Critical 30 Days

On launch day: go live, submit an updated sitemap to Google Search Console, and set up a monitoring schedule. For the 30 days following launch, check weekly:

  • Search Console coverage report -- any new crawl errors or excluded pages?

  • Organic traffic compared to baseline -- any significant drops on key pages?

  • Core Web Vitals report -- is the new site faster? (It should be.)

  • Manual spot-check of key redirects -- are your most important old URLs correctly redirecting?

Minor rankings fluctuations in the first 2-4 weeks are normal as Google recrawls and re-evaluates. As long as you've followed this process, you should see stability -- and often improvement -- by week 6.

When to hire a professional for the migration: If your site has more than 30 pages, an active e-commerce store, complex CMS collections, or existing organic traffic you cannot afford to risk -- hire an expert. The cost of a professional migration is always less than the cost of 3-6 months of traffic recovery.
