Meet Schema and NLWeb: The Secret Language in Which Websites "Talk" to AI Engines

An AI engine doesn't "read" your site the way a visitor reads it. It breaks it down into data — and whatever it can't break down with confidence, it simply won't recommend. The more organized and clear your site is to a machine, the greater the chance it will trust it and cite it in its answers. The two tools that turn this from "luck" into a "method" are Schema and NLWeb.

In short: Schema (structured data) is hidden code that explains to the machine what each item on your site actually means — that this is a price, that this is an address, that this is a common question, that this is a review. NLWeb is a new standard that turns your site into an interface an AI agent can query directly, in natural language.

Why this is critical right now

In Google's world, an error in the code cost you a few places in the ranking. In the world of AI engines, the price is much higher: an engine that draws on your information needs to be confident enough to cite you in a single answer. Uncertainty means disappearance — not a drop to second place, but not appearing at all. Structured data is the most direct way to reduce that uncertainty.

From SEO to machine-readability: what changed

Writing "for Google" focused on keywords. Writing for AI engines focuses on machine readability — how easy it is for a machine to extract specific facts from the site. These are the Schema types I'd recommend every business implement first:

  • Organization / LocalBusiness — who you are, where, opening hours, and how to make contact. The foundation for any local mention.

  • FAQPage — structured questions and answers. This is exactly the format AI engines most like to draw from and cite.

  • Product / Service — what you sell, price, availability. Critical for commerce and shopping agents.

  • Review / AggregateRating — social proof the machine can count and place trust in.

  • Article / Author — who wrote the content and what their authority is — an E-E-A-T signal that AI engines weigh.

What NLWeb is, and why it changes the game

If Schema tells the machine what the information is, NLWeb goes a step further: it turns your site into an endpoint an AI agent can "talk" to directly — ask a question, get a structured answer, without browsing pages. In an era where agents are starting to perform tasks on behalf of the user (find, compare, even buy), a site that isn't accessible to an agent simply doesn't exist for it. NLWeb is the early preparation for that wave.

What we learned from implementing on 300+ sites

After more than 13 years and over 300 Wix sites, the recurring pattern is clear: most businesses don't have a content problem — they have a structure problem. The information exists on the site, but it's buried in free text the machine struggles to extract certainty from. A few insights from the field:

  • Businesses with a structured FAQPage are mentioned in AI answers significantly more often than similar businesses without one — because the format matches exactly how the engine builds an answer.

  • Inconsistency in business details between the site, Google and social networks is the silent killer of visibility: it injects exactly the uncertainty that makes the engine give up on you.

  • In the visibility audits we've run, roughly half the businesses failed to be mentioned because of missing or incorrect structured data — almost always a small technical fix, not a content rewrite.

3 practical steps to start today

  1. Ensure absolute consistency in the business details between the site, Google Business Profile and the social networks — name, address, phone, field. This is the cheapest and most impactful.

  2. Add a real FAQPage with the questions your customers actually ask — not empty marketing questions.

  3. Mark the Schema types relevant to your business (on Wix some of this is automatic, some requires setup) and check them with Google's testing tool. Our practical Schema guide walks through each one.

Frequently asked questions

Does Schema guarantee that I'll be mentioned in AI engines? It doesn't guarantee it, but it removes the biggest barrier. It turns your site from "maybe" to "certain" in the machine's eyes — and that's exactly the difference between being cited and disappearing.

I'm not a technical person — is this for me? We came from the business side, not from code. The idea is simple: you don't need to write Schema manually, you need to understand why it matters and make sure someone (or the platform) did it correctly.

Want to know whether AI engines already understand your business correctly?
