GEO vs. SEO: The Difference, and Why You Need Both

When you start talking about visibility in AI engines, one question immediately comes up: "Wait, so is SEO no longer relevant?" The short answer — SEO is still very important, but it's no longer enough on its own. To understand why, it helps to see clearly what each of them does.

What SEO does

SEO — search engine optimization on Google — aims to place your website high in the search results. When someone searches on Google, they get a list of links, and SEO determines how high you are on that list. The goal: bring the visitor to your website.

What GEO does

GEO — optimization for generative engines — aims to get AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity to understand your business and mention you in the answers they generate. Here there's no list of ten results — there's a single answer, and the goal is to be part of it.

And where does AEO come in?

Alongside GEO you'll also hear about AEO — answer engine optimization. The difference is simple: AEO deals with short, direct answers (the "featured snippet" at the top of Google, or an answer to an FAQ), while GEO deals with in-depth, authoritative content that AI engines summarize and cite. You don't have to choose — a good strategy provides both quick "snacks" (AEO) and "full meals" (GEO), on a solid SEO foundation.

The main difference in one sentence

SEO fights for a spot on the list. GEO fights for a place inside the answer.

And that's a fundamental difference in customer behaviour: in a Google list the customer compares several options; in an AI answer they get a formulated recommendation and usually act on it. Whoever doesn't appear in the answer simply doesn't exist for that customer.

Why both, and not just one

  • A shared foundation — much of what helps with SEO (quality content, clear structure, a fast website) helps GEO too.

  • Complementary audiences — some customers still search on Google, and some have already moved to asking AI. You want both.

  • An additional layer — GEO adds unique emphases: entity clarity, trust, structured data and original, valuable content.

Where to start

If you've already invested in SEO, you're in a good starting position. The next step is to understand what AI engines understand about your business today — and what they're missing in order to recommend you with confidence.

The next step

Want to know how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity understand your specific business? The AI Visibility Audit is a one-time business diagnostic ($69, no subscription) that shows exactly what AI engines understand about your business, how you compare to competitors, and what's worth improving — with a ranked action plan, three checks over 60 days, and unlimited access to our members-only guide library.

One honest note: no tool and no expert can guarantee appearance in AI engine answers. The goal is to significantly improve the odds that your business is understood correctly, surfaces, and gets recommended.
